Introducing Debit and Credit Card Payments

Eckhart Public Library is happy to announce that it now accepts credit and debit card payments at the Adult and Teen Service desks.

The library has established an account with “Square,” the popular online register that allows merchants and other services to accept payments via a card reader attached to an iPad, iPhone, etc.

Patrons wishing to use this service to pay overdue fines, lost item charges and other miscellaneous fees will need their actual credit or debit card so that it can be “swiped” for successful processing.

A digital signature is required and a choice of printed or electronic receipts are available.

Ellen England was recently featured on INC Now's series Your Country

April 26, 2013

Meet the Author: Dr. Trina Chapman-Smith

Who: Dr. Trina Chapman-Smith, longtime local physician
What: Two book signings of Chapman-Smith’s new collection of nonfiction short stories, We Laughed, We Cried -- The Days that Shaped a Doctor
When: Friday, April 26, and Thursday, May 9, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

For months, Dr. Trina Chapman-Smith had a nightly ritual after the dinner dishes were cleared. She put on some music, sat at her dining room table with pen and paper and wrote about her 20-year career practicing medicine. The result is We Laughed, We Cried -- The Days that Shaped a Doctor, a collection of more than 50 short stories. Chapman-Smith will sign copies of the book at two events in Eckhart Public Library’s Close Community Room, Friday, April 26, and Thursday, May 9. Both events are from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

She describes the stories as ranging from "poignantly tear-jerking to outrageously humorous." Chapman-Smith has been a writer as long as she can recall, and the roots of this book formed about 15 years ago when she began taking notes about people and events that touched her. Guiding two children into adulthood was her priority then. Now that her children are grown, she said she wanted to cross the book off her “bucket list” before she turns 50 this year. Her storytelling style has been compared to the British veterinarian and writer, James Herriot, which Chapman-Smith calls “the ultimate compliment.” Her goal in writing the book was to show a more human side to being a doctor and explore how relationships with patients have shaped her life. “Most doctors are doctors because they love people,” she said.

About Dr. Trina-Chapman Smith: A graduate of Manchester College and Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Chapman-Smith has been practicing medicine at DeKalb Health for 20 years. Born in Fort Wayne, she has been married to Roger Smith, a farmer, for 25 years. Their son is a first-year teacher and coach at East Noble Middle School. Their daughter studies pre-medicine at Manchester University. Dr. Chapman-Smith previously published a memoir, 33 Days at Lead Walls, that detailed her fight against breast cancer.

Food for Fines

The library will waive patron overdue fines with a donation of non-perishable food items.

To participate in the amnesty program, library patrons must bring their donated non-perishable food items to the circulation desk. A library staff member will collect and record the donation. Donations of non-perishable food items will be given to area food banks for community distribution. If a patron has a large fine to be waived, we suggest donating several food items. Charges for lost items, as well as postage and processing fees, are not included in this offer.

The goal of this program is two-fold: returning all lost, misplaced or recently found materials belonging to the library, and helping those less fortunate during the holidays.

Happy Holidays!

The Giving Tree

This is not just any tree; this tree is a special tree. It is fondly called The Giving Tree. Patrons are invited to decorate the tree with mittens, hats, scarves, and gloves for children and adults. Brilliantly wrapped boxes will be beneath the tree. Families are urged to share their bounty with those less fortunate by donating canned goods and other non-perishables.

Items will be accepted through December 28th and delivered the first week of 2013. Since needs are so great during the winter months, this is a helpful way to assist agencies as they begin the new year.

VanHorne Retrospective Extended

A retrospective art exhibit honoring local artist and teacher Andrea VanHorne has been extended because of ongoing interest. A Retrospective Watercolor Exhibit:The Artistic Life of Andrea VanHorne 1940-2000 can be seen through Nov. 10 at Eckhart Public Library. The exhibit was curated by Laura (Fischer) Freeze, VanHorne’s niece, and originally was scheduled to last through October. Library director Janelle Graber said the library has continued to receive requests for more time to view the nearly 50 pieces on display. “Many of Andrea VanHorne’s former students have come in,” Graber said. “They’ve thanked staff at the library for hosting the exhibit and shared how she impacted their lives.” The show is the library’s largest individual artist exhibition and its first retrospective.

Celebrate the Artistic Life of Andrea VanHorne

Eckhart Public Library is proud to display A Retrospective Watercolor Exhibit:The Artistic Life of Andrea VanHorne 1940-2000 in the Close Community Room starting October 5th through the end of the month.

Throughout her life Andrea VanHorne created many works of art. After her death in 2000, her husband, Grant VanHorne had her existing works catalogued. He commissioned his niece, Laura Freeze, to locate, document and organize nearly 200 pieces of art. During the month of October, over 40 of VanHorne's paintings will be exhibited.

Andrea VanHorne graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, John Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and Butler University in Indianapolis. She was a teacher in the DeKalb Central United School District for 20 years and taught art at Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne. VanHorne was known for her watercolors and exhibited them in many local and state art shows. In the 1990s, it was included in the Fort Wayne Museum Of Art rental program. She was an artist member of the Hoosier Salon and Artlink. Forty-five years ago, she was the driving force behind the Tri-Kappa Art Show, which still continues at the library as the Area Annual Art Show.

In 1997, in memory of Doris Longden, Mrs. VanHorne produced and donated to the library her Stained Glass Window watercolor, which is located behind the information desk. Also, VanHorne created a series of smaller stained glass watercolors for all the major donors of the library expansion. As a valued friend of the library over the years, she conducted hour-long luncheon sessions on the arts. At the time of her death in 2000, her work was offered for sale at the Toledo Museum of Art. The library purchased her watercolor, Drifting, with donations in her memory. It hangs behind the circulation desk.

From 1960 to 2000, VanHorne taught, raised a family, was an active volunteer and created nearly 200 works of art. The library is honored to present this retrospective of this remarkable woman.  The exhibit will continue through the month of October.

The Giving Tree

EPL's Giving Tree is located at the main library, and it's not just any tree. Patrons are invited to decorate the tree with donations of mittens, hats, scarves, and gloves for children and adults. Brilliantly wrapped boxes will be beneath the tree. Families are urged to share their bounty with those less fortunate by donating canned goods and other non-perishables.

Items will be delivered the first week of 2012. Since needs are so great during the winter months, this is a helpful way to assist agencies as they begin the new year. Remember, 'tis the season to be giving!

Amnesty Program: Food For Fines

From December 1st to December 30th, the library will waive patron overdue fines with a donation of non-perishable food items. To participate in the amnesty program, library patrons must bring their donated non-perishable food items to the circulation desk. A library staff member will collect and record the donation.

Donations of non-perishable food items will be donated to area food banks for community distribution. If a patron has a large fine to be waived, we suggest donating several food items. Charges for lost items, as well as postage and processing fees, are not included in this offer.

Important Updates

The Eckhart Public Library is currently updating its website and the web pages of each department.  Any suggestions you have to help us with this process should be passed to Jamie Long, EPL Webmaster.  This webpage upgrade is being made possible through a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant.  LSTA grants are a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services.  Funds are used to support statewide initiatives through competitive grant programs.  The Indiana State Library oversees the LSTA program for our state.  Funds have been allocated to provide support for digitization of Indiana’s historical documents and further development of the Indiana Memory Program.
