The Producers is a crazy film with amazing music that makes you laugh and possibly wonder what Mel Brooks was thinking.

Meet Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel), a producer who hasn’t had a hit in quite some time. His office is looking shabby, he needs to seduce money from little old ladies, and he’s been reduced to wearing a cardboard belt. Meet Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder), Max’s neurotic accountant. Leo first meets Max in a way that would make most people walk out the door and never come back, but Gene Wilder really adds the perfect amount of crazy to this character. Max and Leo start talking while Leo goes over the books, completely appalled with Max’s records. Max talks Leo into moving some numbers around so everything’s in the clear and while he’s doing so, Leo talks to himself about how, if done correctly, a producer could make a lot of money by producing a flop. Cue the light bulbs over Max’s head!

Leo isn’t happy with his job, so he and Max agree to be partners in producing the biggest flop imaginable. They get the worst director whose plays close on the first night of rehearsal, and from the piles of plays they find one titled “Springtime for Hitler”, written by a former Naxi soldier who is only slightly deranged.

Everything is lined up to fail, but will it? Or will “Springtime for Hitler” turn out to be a hit?

Heather: If you’ve seen the newer version of this music that was produced in 2005 I highly recommend watching this original version. There’s more crazy in the older one. I sat down and watched it with someone very close to me and we had a blast. It’s a great movie to watch with friends, especially if you’re the types who like to tear into movies.
