Does anyone remember that movie Horns starring Daniel Radcliffe where he wakes up in a drunken stupor trying to forget that the love of his life is dead and the whole town blames him? Or the post I wrote about the book before the movie came out? I’m back on a Joe Hill kick, especially with his new book The Fireman being out.

heart shaped

Let’s go back a few years to one of his earlier books, Heart-Shaped Box.

Meet Judas Coyne. He’s a collector of the macabre with things like a cookbook for cannibals, a used hangman’s noose, and a snuff film in his collection the aging death-metal rock legend is always looking for more. One day while on a bidding site he sees something that he can’t buy fast enough. Someone selling a suit that belonged to her step-father. Nothing unusual there, except his ghost is attached to it. After constantly battling his own ghosts Judas isn’t the least bit afraid to invite one into his home. But then the ghost is everywhere. Behind doors, on the T.V., in Jude’s car, outside the window… All the time with a razor blade dangling by a chain from his wrist.

This is just one of the stories Joe Hill has worked on. He’s also done graphic novels, edited and compiled short story collections, and written with other authors (like Stephen King).

Heather: I’m not even entirely sure how I got started reading Joe Hill anymore. Maybe it was the buzz around Horns when the movie was in production? Or reading something by him and Stephen King? I don’t remember. All I know now is that I love his work and I’m excited whenever a new book comes out.

locke and key

Locke & Key is a graphic novel series written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez. The series focuses on three children who have lost their father and home. They’ve moved into an old family house known as Keyhouse. Mysterious things happen with the keys you can find not only in the house, but in the yard as well. What mischief can three kids get into with these sort of keys?

Heather: I absolutely love this series. The characters are interesting and the villain has some good motivation.

Horns is not only a movie starring Daniel Radcliffe, it’s also a book by Joe Hill!

Daniel Radcliffe stars as Ig Perrish in this horror film. He’s the prime suspect in the murder of his girlfriend, Merrin, and it seems that no one (except his lawyer and friend Lee) believes he is innocent. Reporters follow him most everywhere, everyone tells him he should kill himself or let someone do it for him and all sorts of things from the time he wakes up to the time he falls asleep and probably in between.

One night, after too much to drink, Ig passes out and when he wakes up he doesn’t just have the splitting headache of a hangover, he has horns! And they grow as time goes on. The horns alone are enough to freak Ig out, but what the horns do is even freakier. They make whoever Ig is around tell him their darkest secret. Cheating on your spouse? Want to stuff yourself with a pleasure food? Want to kill someone? Ig hears it all and the people telling him their secrets don’t remember telling him.

Who really killed Merrin? Will Ig be convicted of something he didn’t do? Does anyone end up believing him?

Heather: While this movie is not for everyone, it is one that those interested in horror, gore, and psychological thrillers will enjoy. This book is one of my favorites and I feel that the movie holds well to what you expect.

What do you do when the one you love is killed, you’re the only suspect, and suddenly you grow horns? This is what Ig Perrish is going through. Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter, Woman in Black) stars in this coming movie.
